The Digital Technology and Biometry Division performs restoration,
reintegration, and analysis of various digital evidence including
mobile phones, hard disks, and memory cards as well as restoration of
all kinds of videos and audios including CCTV, photos, and videos,
confirmation of forgery of readings, and identification of face,
height, and voice.
In addition, it identifies handwriting and stamp images, finds forged documents and counterfeit bills, and appraises the authenticity of cultural assets and artworks.
Examinations and research on information restoration, reintegration, and analysis for various digital evidence including mobile phones, hard disks, memory cards, etc.
Examinations and research on restoration of various video/audio materials including CCTV, pictures, videos, and recording files, image/sound quality improvement, reading, etc.
Examinations and research on analysis for biological information including 2D/3D measurement, coidentity / forgery, human face, height, and voice and 3D modeling
Examinations and research on coidentity/forgery of handwriting, stamp image, etc., forgery of documents and marketable securities / money, and appraisal of the authenticity of cultural assets and artworks
The Digital Technology and Biometry Division consists of a Video Lab, Digital Forensics Lab, Biometrics Lab, Document Research Lab, Intelligent Forgery Research Lab, U-forensic Lab, and Audio/Media Lab.
The Video Lab conducts analysis and research on video materials requested for criminal investigations. It is responsible for the reading of recorded materials (letters, numbers, symbols, forms, vehicle models, colors, situations, etc.), temporal and spatial interpretation of objects (position, size, direction, speed, etc.), forgery and modulation of video materials, and special photo analysis such as aerial photographs.
Giving vividness to videos with degraded image quality due to deterioration by heat, noise, motion, and low light intensity by using various image enhancement algorithms
Identification of license plates, letters, phone numbers, etc. by reading letters, numbers, symbols, etc., identification of car models with features such as the appearance and shape, identification of original colors in distorted images, reading of traffic signals, determination of the presence of impact or movement with before-and-after comparison, and examination of the position, direction, and speed of an object in video
Identification on whether or not the proof photograph was edited or manipulated, whether or not the presented video is an original or a copy, or whether or not the video was edited, etc.
Development of various image enhancement algorithms, image evaluation techniques, and image analysis programs and training for investigative agencies
The Digital Forensics Lab is a place to conduct examination and research on the recovery, analysis and forgery of digital evidence (electronics such as computers, mobile phones, DVRs, black boxes, memories, etc.) information. It is responsible for disk analysis, mobile analysis, hardware analysis, source code and log analysis.
The Biometrics Lab is a place to conduct analysis and research on criminal investigation videos (CCTV digital video, vehicle black box video, photo, film, etc.). It is responsible for biometric measurement and analysis of characters in video materials (whether they are the same person) and 3D measurement and analysis for crime-site evidence.
The Document Research Lab is responsible for analysis on documents including handwriting, stamp image, forgery of various documents, forgery of securities, a mark on trump card, and reading of unidentified characters. In order to carry out these tasks, the laboratory conducts examinations and research not only with analysis methods using various light sources such as infrared rays and ultraviolet rays, but also with other physical and chemical analysis methods.
The Intelligent Forgery Research Lab performs analysis and research on forgery of various documents, forgery of securities/money, and authenticity of artworks, cultural assets, etc. For this purpose, the laboratory mainly uses nondestructive analysis methods using various light sources.
The Audio/Media Lab conducts examinations and research on analysis of various kinds of acoustic information such as determination on whether a voice recognized in various recording media is the same person’s, whether the acoustic information was edited, improvement of sound quality, restoration of modulated voice, engine sound analysis, etc.
Analysis to remove the information other than the information of interest from the recorded sound information, or to improve the listening to the information of interest
Analysis to infer the process of recording the acoustic information on the recording medium through the frequency analysis and the waveform analysis for the information existing in the record
Analysis for the features of sound source of recorded sound information and restoration of modulated voice
Marine inspector, Park Gyeong-jo died while cracking down on a Chinese fishing boat in illegal operation offshore of Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. For this case, the shaky image shot in a 2.5-meter wave was restored by being split into around a thousand photographs, and it was confirmed that he was hit by a shovel of a Chinese sailor and fell into the sea.
Jang Ja-yeon committed suicide in 2009 leaving a memo that she performed sexual favors for dozens of people, including press executive, etc. under coercion of the agency she belonged to. Mr. Jeon argued that he received a letter from her before she died, and submitted it to the press. Analysis on handwriting was performed for the letter, and it was found that the handwriting on the letter was different from her handwriting. The supreme court reached a verdict for Mr. Jeon as forgery of evidence.
A suspect made damage to a glass door of a store and vehicles using a mock gun equipped with iron balls in Gangnam, Incheon, etc., while driving a car (50 cases of crime). The Digital Technology and Biometry Division contributed to arresting the suspect by reading the license plate of his car from the CCTV provided by using the forensic video analysis program developed by the division.
10 billion KRW was withdrawn from Kookmin Bank with a forged check. As a result of analysis, the Digital Technology and Biometry Division provided a clue for the case by identifying the forged serial number. The swindlers involved in the case were arrested.
