Analysis Service

The Digital Technology and Biometry Division performs restoration, reintegration, and analysis of various digital evidence including mobile phones, hard disks, and memory cards as well as restoration of all kinds of videos and audios including CCTV, photos, and videos, confirmation of forgery of readings, and identification of face, height, and voice.
In addition, it identifies handwriting and stamp images, finds forged documents and counterfeit bills, and appraises the authenticity of cultural assets and artworks.

Introduction of Laboratory

The Digital Technology and Biometry Division consists of a Video Lab, Digital Forensics Lab, Biometrics Lab, Document Research Lab, Intelligent Forgery Research Lab, U-forensic Lab, and Audio/Media Lab.


01 Video Lab

The Video Lab conducts analysis and research on video materials requested for criminal investigations. It is responsible for the reading of recorded materials (letters, numbers, symbols, forms, vehicle models, colors, situations, etc.), temporal and spatial interpretation of objects (position, size, direction, speed, etc.), forgery and modulation of video materials, and special photo analysis such as aerial photographs.

  • Giving Vividness to Videos

    Giving vividness to videos with degraded image quality due to deterioration by heat, noise, motion, and low light intensity by using various image enhancement algorithms

  • Video Reading

    Identification of license plates, letters, phone numbers, etc. by reading letters, numbers, symbols, etc., identification of car models with features such as the appearance and shape, identification of original colors in distorted images, reading of traffic signals, determination of the presence of impact or movement with before-and-after comparison, and examination of the position, direction, and speed of an object in video

  • Forgery/Modulation of Videos

    Identification on whether or not the proof photograph was edited or manipulated, whether or not the presented video is an original or a copy, or whether or not the video was edited, etc.

  • Research on Forensic Video Field

    Development of various image enhancement algorithms, image evaluation techniques, and image analysis programs and training for investigative agencies

02 Digital Forensics Lab

The Digital Forensics Lab is a place to conduct examination and research on the recovery, analysis and forgery of digital evidence (electronics such as computers, mobile phones, DVRs, black boxes, memories, etc.) information. It is responsible for disk analysis, mobile analysis, hardware analysis, source code and log analysis.

Disk Analysis

  • Data analysis and examination on forgery for the data saved in digital storage media (vehicle black boxes, DVR systems, computers, etc.)

Mobile Analysis

  • Recovery of deleted videos, call records, texts, etc. and examination on forgery for the data saved in mobile devices (feature phones, smartphones, PDAs, navigations, etc.)

New Device & Hardware Analysis

  • New device analysis and building a DB, hardware device analysis, etc.

Source Code and Log Analysis

  • Analysis on various source codes (malicious code, copyright infringement, gambling, executable file tampering, hardware operation analysis, etc.)
03 Biometrics Lab

The Biometrics Lab is a place to conduct analysis and research on criminal investigation videos (CCTV digital video, vehicle black box video, photo, film, etc.). It is responsible for biometric measurement and analysis of characters in video materials (whether they are the same person) and 3D measurement and analysis for crime-site evidence.

04 Document Research Lab

The Document Research Lab is responsible for analysis on documents including handwriting, stamp image, forgery of various documents, forgery of securities, a mark on trump card, and reading of unidentified characters. In order to carry out these tasks, the laboratory conducts examinations and research not only with analysis methods using various light sources such as infrared rays and ultraviolet rays, but also with other physical and chemical analysis methods.

Handwriting & Stamp Image Identification

  • For handwriting identification, the laboratory analyzes unique characteristics of individual’s handwriting by examining various characteristics of handwriting in the material to be analyzed and the material to be compared. For stamp image identification, it analyzes specifications and characteristics of the stamp image to be analyzed and the stamp image to be compared.

Document Forgery Identification

  • Document forgery is examined and analyzed by various methods for printed documents and written documents.
05 Intelligent Forgery Research Lab

The Intelligent Forgery Research Lab performs analysis and research on forgery of various documents, forgery of securities/money, and authenticity of artworks, cultural assets, etc. For this purpose, the laboratory mainly uses nondestructive analysis methods using various light sources.

Identification of Document Forgery

  • The forgery of printed and written documents is examined and analyzed by various methods.

Identification of Counterfeit bill

  • Anti-counterfeiting elements inserted in standards such as banknotes and securities and printing methods are compared and analyzed to identify a forgery.

Analysis on Identification Mark of Color printouts

  • The information about the printer and printing time is identified by analyzing the identification mark inserted in the color laser outputs.

Identification of a mark on the back of trump card or hwatu

  • To examine if there is any mark on the back of a trump card or hwatu, which allows to identify the content, analysis is done by using various light sources such as infrared light, UV light, etc. and image treatment.
06 U-Forensic Lab

The U-Forensic Lab is a remote scientific investigation lab, in which analysis for digital evidence can be requested, and the digital evidence can also be examined, and has been installed in 4 district local police agencies (Seoul, Busan, Jeonbuk and Jeju).

07 Audio/Media Lab

The Audio/Media Lab conducts examinations and research on analysis of various kinds of acoustic information such as determination on whether a voice recognized in various recording media is the same person’s, whether the acoustic information was edited, improvement of sound quality, restoration of modulated voice, engine sound analysis, etc.

불임치료목적으로 복용한 반묘(cantharides)에
의한 사망사건

강원도 원주시 한의원에서 불임치료목적으로 지은 한약, 한약가루약(일명 반묘가루) 및 한약추출액을 혼합하여 마신 직후 환자가 사망하였으며, 감정결과 위 내용물 및 혈액에서 칸타리 딘(cantharidin)이 검출됨. 칸타리딘은 반묘의 주성분으로 치사량이 10mg이고 과량복용시 복통, 이질, 토혈, 혈뇨, 혈압 저하 등에 이어 사망한다고 알려져 있음
