The Forensic DNA Division started the notion's first DNA analysis in 1992. In 2004 the forensic DNA Division was internationally recognized for its testing agency by KOLAS. The division has been globally recognized as a qualified DNA analysis facility through the Seolae village case in 2006. Also, the division performs the identification of human remains caused by natural disasters or other extreme accidents such as the Daegu subway fire incident.
In accordance with "Act on Use and Protection DNA Identification Information", the DNA Identification Management System for crime-scene DNA and arrestee DNA database has been established since 2010. Based on the circumstance, currently DNA Analysis Division changed to Forensci DNA Division.
Forensic DNA Division runs in headquater and each branch office; seoul office, Busan office, Daejeon office, Gwangju office, Daegu office. Forensic DNA Division in the headquarter runs 8 different sections; Crime-Scene DNA Section, Trace DNA Section, Mt & Compact bone DNA Section, Non-Human DNA & Forensic microbial Section, DNA Database Section, Missing Children DNA Section, Arrestee DNA Section, Suspect DNA Section and also operates SMART Labs for urgent affairs in several area.
